How to pick accents that fit

• Size the rug right. In a living room, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. A 5 by 8 works in a small room; an 8 by 10 fits most family rooms.
• Hang art at eye level. Center pieces about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Over a sofa, keep the art about two thirds of the sofa width and 8 to 10 inches above the back.
• Layer your light. Most rooms need three sources: overhead, a floor or table lamp, and an accent light. It makes short Massachusetts winter days feel brighter.

Swap pillows and throws with the seasons for an easy refresh. A large mirror across from a window bounces light around smaller rooms. Match metal finishes and repeat one accent color two or three times so the room feels planned.
